Case Story for Coming Out
Jerry, 30, worked for an Insurance company, and lived at home wioh his parents who were devoutly religious. He had, for years, heard crude and bigotted remarks about gay men, which had seriously disquieted him, as he had always and only had feelings of attraction to other guys. He had never acted on these attractions, being too afraid to incur the wrath of his parents and family.
After work he occasionally stopped off for a pint at a pub near his office, and it was there that he had met Rob who was openly gay, and attracted to Jerry. They got into conversation, and Rob invited Jerry to his home for a meal. Jerry was terrified, but very much wanted to accept. He dared not let his parents know, and worked himself up into a panic attack.
This made him decide to seek help to sort himself out.
In therapy he found the confidence and courage to make the decision to leave home and set up on his own, so that he would no longer be under scrutiny and accountable to his parents for his every move.
Jerry had several dates with Rob, and they fell in love, but Jerry decided that he would not tell his family, and would continue to be discreet. He gained much confidence in therapy, enjoying his new-found independence and freedom to be himself.
